What is a Midlife Crisis for Man
The stereotype for Northern Europe movies is boring, as boring as the weather and character. When I first played the movie, I thought it might be likewise. However, the movie goes surprisingly impressive when I started watching it on Sunday evening.
The first quarter of the movie is about the midlife crisis of four high school teachers, married, having kids, and the life goes go as tedious as usual, so the tempo of the movie, is slow and peaceful. It reveals the crisis of mid-aged all faced around the world, reduced energy, and physical power, marriage crisis, bad relationship with kids, and work in a mess. But they find a way for self-rescue, drinking.
As we all know, alcohol is amazing and mysterious, most people get exciting after drinking, so as do the four teachers in the movie. After drinking, they do not have problems with life and work, full of energy and power, which can be seen in shots of the classes interacting with students. As of the moment, alcohol looks like an antidote to a midlife crisis.
But as the saying goes, a little drink delights, a great drink kills. Too much drink not only damages the body but also the spirit. The reason that someone gets addicted to something is the enjoyment caused by it and hence becomes more obsessed with the enjoyment, in doing so the dose of intake of something will be increased, as shown in the movie also. When they found that drinking has brought quite some changes to their life, they enhance the stimulus, having more drinks, hoping to get the energy of youth back. However, the result is quite the opposite, they gradually get out of control of their behavior. On this note, the movie mix-cuts some shots of the over-drinking of some country leaders in foreign affairs, indicating the trend of the movie.
In the end, the rescue plans become a collapse plan. A midlife crisis is not only a mental problem but also a physiological problem. The somatic function declines when the body gets older, especially after forty, along with hormone secretion. The anxiety and fatigue grow with each passing day. From men’s perspective, they become silent, do not like talking to people, be reluctant to change, and take the initiative, which is common in mid-aged men, drinking, smoking, fishing, all day long.
So as the teachers in the movie, scientifically speaking, alcohol is bad for health, but why does it bring happiness? Because it stimulates the brain to a great extent. The teachers in the movie do the same thing, become active and lively after the stimulus from drinking. When they become sober, the crisis of mid-aged comes back again. At the beginning of the movie, they try to avoid drinking too much, keeping a healthy lifestyle that may have lasted for decades. When it comes to their forties, they found the habit is out of use but drinking.
There is a contrast in the movie. In the beginning, there is a revelry of teenagers after drinking, no crisis after that. On the other hand, the revelry of the four teachers only results in disaster and breakdown. That shows the cruelty of reality and growth. The topic of the movie is not about solving the midlife crisis through drinking, but learning how to meet the crisis. At the end of the movie, they realize that drinking is just an adjustment to life but not a resolution. It will not solve problems, what we need to learn is how to open our minds, love our family, to embrace life without drinking.
The courage to face life without other objects is the most valuable one to have. When I am on my way to the age, I have tried many ways to keep calm and peace, one of the ways is to do meditation, which is a good way to change the mindset and have inner peace. And whenever I do meditation, I like to use the floor lamp with a shelf.
